Allsport Photographers' Film to be Scanned on Location;
Images Instantly Available via Remote Locations around the World
NEW YORK, July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Applied Graphics Technologies,
Inc. (Nasdaq-NNM: AGTX), the largest provider of outsourced digital
imaging and archiving management services in the country, today
announced it will operate its Digital Link imaging system in a mobile
unit on site in Atlanta to provide immediate scanning and handle remote
transmission of Allsport photography taken at the 1996 Summer Olympic
Games.
Allsport, holder of the world's largest collection of sports-related
images, will make the Olympics images available to its customers around
the world via its own digital network and its Internet site, through a
sophisticated computer network providing seamless, cross-platform
service regardless of whether customers use Windows NT or Macintosh.
"AGT has worked with Allsport for several years to maximize the
value of its images," said Georgia L. McCabe, AGT's senior vice
president of marketing and business development. "Initially, we were
selected to service their extensive archive of images, installing our
Digital Link System on site to handle their daily image production and
their retrospective digitization needs. And recently we installed a
system at their London location. The work we're doing for Allsport at
the Olympics is one of our most ambitious endeavors, because of the
time-critical element of this world-class event."
"Our business alliance with AGT enables us to offer this
unprecedented level of service to our customers around the world," said
Steve Powell, president of Allsport, which is headquartered in the
United Kingdom. "We are continually searching for ways to improve
service to our customers, and we rely on AGT to think proactively on our
behalf and provide the technology expertise to make it happen."
Workflow for Instant Access
Allsport's photographers will deliver their developed film to the
Allsport Office, stationed in the Main Press Center within the Olympic
complex. There, AGT technicians scan the film and import the resulting
images into AGT's Digital Link System.
Using the system, all images will undergo image optimization, such
as cropping and color correction. At the same time, extensive editorial
caption information will be embedded in the electronic image files. At
this point, the images will be ready for export to customers who have
contracted with Allsport.
Electronic files will be generated automatically in five standard
image formats, including TIFF, GIFF, and high-resolution JPEG. The AGT
system also delivers images automatically to specific customers in
formats pre-set to their requirements, including rasterized caption
fields with agency logo graphics.
As a byproduct of the scanning service, the Olympics images will be
simultaneously added to the existing Allsport on-line archive of
100,000 images, which is supported on site by AGT in Los Angeles and
London.
AGT Network Delivers across Platforms
The AGT solution for Allsport relies on robust processor hardware
manufactured by Intel, using a Windows NT-based operating system.
Scanned images will be exported to dual Pentium servers located within
the Allsport Office on site at the Olympic Main Press Center complex.
Although the AGT network is driven by a Windows NT backbone,
Macintosh users will receive seamless image transmission, with no
conversion steps necessary to access the files.
The Allsport servers are connected via high-speed ISDN lines to
multi-platform servers at the Allsport facilities in London and Los
Angeles and to the Allsport web site on the Internet,
<http://www.allsport.com>. Allsport's imaging system combines the
leading features from Unix, Windows NT, OS/2 and MacIntosh platforms, in
a seamless mix. Users on any platform around the world can access the
images and the production and transmission process will be seamless to
them. In fact, many users in the predominately Macintosh-based
publications industry would be fascinated to learn the images had been
manipulated using Intel-based hardware on a Windows NT-based operating
system.
Allsport is the world's largest sports photo agency and has been
serving the media worldwide since 1968. The company, which has its
headquarters in London, also serves in an official capacity for the
International Olympic Committee; United States Olympic Committee
(Corporate Services); Major League Soccer; International Amateur
Athletic Federation; FINA; United States Soccer Federation; Women's
Tennis Association and Women's Professional Volleyball Association.
